Should I keep all my money in a brokerage account?
If you've got a large chunk of cash, you might secure better returns outside of a brokerage account. You could lose money. If your money is swept into a money market fund, that cash won't be insured by the FDIC or SIPC. It's possible to lose money.
Spreading your assets across different brokerage accounts can help protect you against potential fraud or unauthorized access, Roller says. If one broker has a breach, then you can still trade with another investment firm. The safety of your funds is also a concern.
Verhaalen often recommends clients maintain a cash reserve that's, at a minimum, the equivalent of six months of income.
They must also have a certain amount of liquidity on hand, thus allowing them to cover funds in these cases. What this means is that even if you have more than $500,000 in one brokerage account, chances are high that you won't lose any of your money even if the broker is forced into liquidation.
Downsides of a standard brokerage account
Since it's a taxable account, you'll have to pay taxes on earnings in your account, including capital gains and dividends.
However, it may not be the best idea to keep more than $250,000 in cash at a specific brokerage firm. “But when your money's fully invested, you do not have a risk,” Clark says. Beyond that, investing through a company that charges you high or even moderate fees is much more likely to impact your long-term wealth.
Assuming you're already fully funding an employer-sponsored retirement account such as a 401(k) or individual retirement account (IRA), have an emergency fund and don't have excessive credit card debt, a brokerage account can be a useful addition to your financial portfolio.
A brokerage account is a key part of your financial plan, as investing in markets is one of the best ways to achieve long-term growth. It's important that you work with a company or person you can trust, because it's your money and you are investing in your future.
A stock portfolio focused on dividends can generate $1,000 per month or more in perpetual passive income, Mircea Iosif wrote on Medium. “For example, at a 4% dividend yield, you would need a portfolio worth $300,000.
The 50-30-20 rule recommends putting 50% of your money toward needs, 30% toward wants, and 20% toward savings. The savings category also includes money you will need to realize your future goals.
Where do billionaires keep their money?
Common types of securities include bonds, stocks and funds (mutual and exchange-traded). Funds and stocks are the bread-and-butter of investment portfolios. Billionaires use these investments to ensure their money grows steadily.
Protecting your assets

There are times when investing in multiple brokerages might be the best strategy for an investor. If you're looking to gain exposure to certain types of investments or asset classes that your current brokerage firm doesn't offer, Westlin argues that you might want to open another account with a firm that does.
Many people fear putting money into a brokerage account for fear of losing it. And while it's true that a market downturn could cause your investments to lose value, you are protected against certain types of losses.
Brokerages typically don't have cash-handling employees in brick-and-mortar locations. Brokerage accounts don't offer all the services that a traditional bank offers. Brokerages might not offer additional products such as mortgages and other loans.
Brokerage accounts are taxable, but provide much greater liquidity and investment flexibility. 401(k) accounts offer significant tax advantages at the cost of tying up funds until retirement. Both types of accounts can be useful for helping you reach your ultimate financial goals, retirement or otherwise.
Cash and Cash Equivalents
Cash equivalents include short-term, highly liquid assets with minimal risk, such as Treasury bills, money market funds and certificates of deposit. Money market funds and high-yield savings are also places to salt away cash in a downturn.
- Charles Schwab - Best for high net worth investors.
- Merrill Edge - Best rewards program.
- Fidelity - Best overall online broker.
- Interactive Brokers - Great overall, best for professionals.
- E*TRADE - Best web-based platform.
Banking regulation has changed over the last 100 years to provide more protection to consumers. You can keep money in a bank account during a recession and it will be safe through FDIC and NCUA deposit insurance. Up to $250,000 is secure in individual bank accounts and $500,000 is safe in joint bank accounts.
Brokerage vs.
A self-directed IRA or SDIRA offers the added advantage and flexibility of allowing you to invest in real estate (as investment property only). With IRAs, you'll generally have a minimum deposit requirement of $1,000 whereas many brokerage accounts have no minimums to get started.
Is money safer in a brokerage account than a bank?
While bank balances are insured by the FDIC, investments in a brokerage account are covered by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC). It protects investors in the unlikely event that their brokerage firm fails.
"The sale of an investment held for greater than one year is treated as long-term capital gains and subject to taxation at long-term capital gains tax rates that, like qualified dividends, are taxed at a favorable rate that can range from 0% to 20%."
The average stock market return is about 10% per year, as measured by the S&P 500 index, but that 10% average rate is reduced by inflation.
If your bank is FDIC-insured and goes under, you're protected for up to $250,000 per depositor, per account category. Brokerage accounts work similarly. The Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) offers up to $500,000 in protection per brokerage account, including a $250,000 cash limit.
1. High-yield savings accounts. High-yield savings accounts and money market accounts are both insured, up to $250,000, by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. These offer the most liquidity this side of carrying cash around in your wallet, and are currently paying rates of around 4.50% to 5%.
