Can stocks make you owe money?
The price of the stock has to drop more than the percentage of margin you used to fund the purchase in order for you to owe money. For example, if you used 50% margin to make a purchase, the stock price has to fall more than 50% before you owe money on your purchase.
Can You End Up in Debt If a Stock Goes Down? In a standard cash account, you can't end up in debt if a stock goes down. However, if you're trading on margin, that's a different story. Margin accounts can lead to debt if you're not careful.
No. A stock price can't go negative, or, that is, fall below zero. So an investor does not owe anyone money. They will, however, lose whatever money they invested in the stock if the stock falls to zero.
Margin trades allow larger gains than regular investments, but also higher losses. These gains can be enticing in bull markets, but when the trades fail, an investor can owe more money than they originally had to trade with.
Options strategies that involve selling options contracts may lead to significant losses, and the use of margin may amplify those losses. Some of these strategies may expose you to losses that exceed your initial investment amount. Therefore, you will owe money to your broker in addition to the investment loss.
Generally, investments do not directly affect your credit score.
Can a stock ever rebound after it has gone to zero? Yes, but unlikely. A more typical example is the corporate shell gets zeroed and a new company is vended [sold] into the shell (the legal entity that remains after the bankruptcy) and the company begins trading again.
A drop in price to zero means the investor loses his or her entire investment: a return of -100%. To summarize, yes, a stock can lose its entire value. However, depending on the investor's position, the drop to worthlessness can be either good (short positions) or bad (long positions).
A gambler can still strike it big, but it's more likely the person will ultimately lose. Investing can yield great losses, but the stock market generally appreciates over time, and if you keep investing, the odds are generally in your favor, certainly more so than for a gambler.
Even if the value of your stocks goes up, you won't pay taxes until you sell the stock. Once you sell a stock that's gone up in value and you make a profit, you'll have to pay the capital gains tax. Note that you will, however, pay taxes on dividends whenever you receive them.
Can you lose money in stocks if you don't sell?
When the stock market declines, the market value of your stock investment can decline as well. However, because you still own your shares (if you didn't sell them), that value can move back into positive territory when the market changes direction and heads back up. So, you may lose value, but that can be temporary.

Investors might sell a stock if it's determined that other opportunities can earn a greater return. If an investor holds onto an underperforming stock or is lagging the overall market, it may be time to sell that stock and put the money to work in another investment.
The value of the stock itself can't go negative. It can only become zero is the company goes bankrupt. The only case when you can see negative result is if you bought the stock and the price declined. For example, you bought Walmart stock at $157 and it fell to $150.
Generally speaking, you want to try to avoid selling stocks to pay off debt. But in some cases, simple mathematics pushes the needle in that direction. For example, if you have a lot of debt but it's at a 0% interest rate, there's really no hurry to get it paid off.
Selling call options on a stock that is not owned is the riskiest option strategy. This is also known as writing a naked call and selling an uncovered call.
When a stock's price falls to zero, a shareholder's holdings in this stock become worthless. Major stock exchanges actually delist shares once they fall below specific price values.
But the credit report leaves out some important data: According to Experian, “information about assets such as checking account balances, savings account balances, certificates of deposit, individual retirement accounts, stocks, bonds or other investments” are not listed in your credit profile.
Borrowing money you cannot repay
And if you lose money with your investment, you may face more money owed in credit card fees on the balance, due to late or missed payments, and take a credit score hit.
Though delisting does not affect your ownership, shares may not hold any value post-delisting. Thus, if any of the stocks that you own get delisted, it is better to sell your shares. You can either exit the market or sell it to the company when it announces buyback.
What is the biggest gain for a stock ever?
During yesterday's trading, NVIDIA's market value jumped by a whopping $277 billion, a record-breaking achievement. So far this year, their total gains have reached an impressive $740 billion, bringing their overall market capitalization close to $2 trillion.
Losses for short-sellers can be particularly heavy during a short-squeeze, which is when a heavily shorted stock unexpectedly rises in value, triggering a cascade of further price increases as more and more short-sellers are forced to buy the stock to close out their positions.
When there are no buyers, you can't sell your shares—you'll be stuck with them until there is some buying interest from other investors. A buyer could pop in a few seconds, or it could take minutes, days, or even weeks in the case of very thinly traded stocks.
The price of a stock can fall to zero, but you would never lose more than you invested. Although losing your entire investment is painful, your obligation ends there. You will not owe money if a stock declines in value. For these reasons, cash accounts are likely your best bet as a beginner investor.
Hundreds of stocks have broken the buck this year, following a slump in the once-hot market for buzzy startups seeking rapid growth. As of Friday, 557 stocks listed on U.S. exchanges were trading below $1 a share, up from fewer than a dozen in early 2021, according to Dow Jones Market Data.
