How long will it take to recover stock market losses?
It typically takes five months to reach the “bottom” of a correction. However, once the market starts to turn, it can recover quickly. The average recovery time for a correction is just four months! That's why investors with truly diversified portfolios may consider staying investing for the long-term.
For the large-blend category (home to widely held broad market index funds such as SPDR S&P 500 Index Trust SPY and Vanguard Total Stock Market Index VTSMX) for example, performance bounced back after about six months, on average. But the maximum recovery times were far worse.
Starting with the “tech wreck” in 2000, inflation totaled 35.7%, prolonging the real recovery in purchasing power an additional seven years and nine months. The bounce-back from the 2008 crash took five and a half years, but an additional half year to regain your purchasing power.
The formula is expressed as a change from the initial value to the final value. The impact of percentage changes on the value of a $1,000 investment is listed in Table 1 below. With a loss of 30%, you need a gain of about 43% to recover. With a loss of 40%, you need a gain of about 67% to recover.
As a whole, analysts are optimistic about the outlook for stock prices in 2024. The consensus analyst price target for the S&P 500 is 5,090, suggesting roughly 8.5% upside from current levels.

When a stock's price falls to zero, a shareholder's holdings in this stock become worthless. Major stock exchanges actually delist shares once they fall below specific price values.
The Dow Jones did not return to its peak close of September 3, 1929, for 25 years, until November 23, 1954.
From peak to trough, US gross domestic product fell by 4.3 percent, making this the deepest recession since World War II. It was also the longest, lasting eighteen months.
Compared with the Stock Market Crash of 1929, which sparked the decade-long Great Depression, the markets recovered relatively quickly after the stock market crash of 1987, regaining their pre-crash heights within two years.
Should I sell my stocks at a loss?
An investor may also continue to hold if the stock pays a healthy dividend. Generally, though, if the stock breaks a technical marker or the company is not performing well, it is better to sell at a small loss than to let the position tie up your money and potentially fall even further.
The buyer could be another investor or a market maker. Market makers can take the opposite side of a trade to provide liquidity for stocks that are listed on major exchanges.
As illustrated in the accompanying chart, as the loss on an investment increases, the gain necessary to recover fully from that loss rises exponentially. For instance, to recover from a 10% loss, an investor needs an 11% gain. To recover from a 50% loss, an investor needs a 100% gain.
S&P 500 could hit 6,500 by end-2025, says Capital Economics.
Highlights: 5.2% 10-year expected nominal return for U.S. large-cap equities; 9.9% for European equities; 9.1% for emerging-markets equities; 5.0% for U.S. aggregate bonds (as of September 2023). All return assumptions are nominal (non-inflation-adjusted).
Optimistic: 6%-7% per year.
If you assume margins and P/E multiples will remain at their current high level, and expect sales and buybacks to grow at their historical rates, then you can anticipate making about 6% in returns per year over the next decade.
- 1) Hedging: Most financial markets offer various kinds of hedging tools to ensure that your losses, if any, are minimised. ...
- 2) Stop Loss: Most financial trading platforms will offer a stop loss risk management tool to limit potential losses.
Gather your support team around you just as you would if you had lost a loved one. Talk. You don't have to talk about the specifics of the loss, just your feelings about it. This is an important way for you to process your grief and not get stuck in it.
After a stock suffers a loss, many investors plan to hold onto it until it returns to its purchase price. They intend to sell the stock once they recover this paper loss. This means they will break even and "erase" their mistake. Unfortunately, many of these same stocks will continue to slide.
In general, long-term capital gains are treated more favorably than short-term gains. So you may consider taking a loss sooner than you might otherwise, in order to minimize your taxes. Or you might try to use low-tax long-term gains to offset more highly taxed short-term gains.
Why do 90% of people lose money in the stock market?
Staggering data reveals 90% of retail investors underperform the broader market. Lack of patience and undisciplined trading behaviors cause most losses. Insufficient market knowledge and overconfidence lead to costly mistakes. Tips from famous investors on how to achieve long-term success.
About 90% of investors lose money trading stocks. That's 9 out of every 10 people — both newbies and seasoned professionals — losing their hard earned dollars by trying to outsmart an unpredictable and extremely volatile machine.
Not everyone, however, lost money during the worst economic downturn in American history. Business titans such as William Boeing and Walter Chrysler actually grew their fortunes during the Great Depression.
For workers and households, the picture was less rosy. Unemployment was at 5% at the end of 2007, reached a high of 10% in October 2009, and did not recover to 5% until 2015, nearly eight years after the beginning of the recession. Real median household income did not recover to pre-recession levels until 2016.
Economic downturns hurt the optimistic bullish investors but reward the pessimistic bearish investors. Several individuals who bet against or “shorted” the market became rich or richer. Percy Rockefeller, William Danforth, and Joseph P. Kennedy made millions shorting stocks at this time.
