How long does it take to regain losses from stock market?
It typically takes five months to reach the “bottom” of a correction. However, once the market starts to turn, it can recover quickly. The average recovery time for a correction is just four months! That's why investors with truly diversified portfolios may consider staying investing for the long-term.
The bounce-back from the 2008 crash took five and a half years, but an additional half year to regain your purchasing power.
There are a number of instances where investment losses are recoverable. These cases fall broadly under three categories: excessive trading, unsuitable investments and misrepresentations.
As shown in the table below, the recovery period for U.S. stocks has been as long as 15 years: In the wake of the 1929 Crash, the IA SBBI US Large Stock Index didn't fully recover until late 1944. For gold bugs, the longest recovery period spanned more than 26 years (from October 1980 until April 2007).
- Learn from your mistakes. Traders need to be able to recognize their strengths and weaknesses—and plan around them. ...
- Keep a trade log. ...
- Write it off. ...
- Slowly start to rebuild. ...
- Scale up and scale down. ...
- Use limit and stop orders.
The crash lasted until 1932, resulting in the Great Depression, a time in which stocks lost nearly 90% of their value. The Dow didn't fully recover until November of 1954.
After peaking in March 2000, it took the Nasdaq 15 years to get back to that level. Even the most enduring brands were slow to recover.
After a loss, it takes a greater gain to return to your original value. If you invested $100,000, and your account declined 20%. If you gained 20% back, you would be $4,000 short of your initial investment. To fully recover from the 20% loss, you'd need to gain 25%.
The formula is expressed as a change from the initial value to the final value. The impact of percentage changes on the value of a $1,000 investment is listed in Table 1 below. With a loss of 30%, you need a gain of about 43% to recover. With a loss of 40%, you need a gain of about 67% to recover.
You do not “get back” your losses. They are deducted from your taxable income. The reduction in taxes will be a percent of the loss, typically 15%. This may result in a lower amount due, or a higher refund.
How long did it take for the stock market to recover in the 1970s?
The United Kingdom did not return to the same market level until May 1987 (only a few months before the Black Monday crash), whilst the United States did not see the same level in real terms until August 1993, over twenty years after the 1973–74 crash began.
As shown above, recovery times vary widely and depend on the economic environment. When bear markets are not accompanied by recession, recoveries from bear markets only took an average of 10 months to reach a new record high.
In just two trading sessions, the DJIA gained back 288 points, or 57 percent, of the total Black Monday downturn. Less than two years later, US stock markets surpassed their pre-crash highs.
Staggering data reveals 90% of retail investors underperform the broader market. Lack of patience and undisciplined trading behaviors cause most losses. Insufficient market knowledge and overconfidence lead to costly mistakes. Tips from famous investors on how to achieve long-term success.
As illustrated in the accompanying chart, as the loss on an investment increases, the gain necessary to recover fully from that loss rises exponentially. For instance, to recover from a 10% loss, an investor needs an 11% gain. To recover from a 50% loss, an investor needs a 100% gain.
An investor may also continue to hold if the stock pays a healthy dividend. Generally, though, if the stock breaks a technical marker or the company is not performing well, it is better to sell at a small loss than to let the position tie up your money and potentially fall even further.

The slide continued through the summer of 1932, when the Dow closed at 41.22, its lowest value of the twentieth century, 89 percent below its peak. The Dow did not return to its pre-crash heights until November 1954. The financial boom occurred during an era of optimism. Families prospered.
The best performing investments during the Depression were government bonds (many corporations stopped paying interest on their bonds) and annuities.
The S&P 500 generated an impressive 26.29% total return in 2023, rebounding from an 18.11% setback in 2022. Heading into 2024, investors are optimistic the same macroeconomic tailwinds that fueled the stock market's 2023 rally will propel the S&P 500 to new all-time highs in 2024.
Will tech stocks recover in 2024?
Will 2024 be a good year for tech stocks? With the Nasdaq-100 index rising 53% in 2023, the tech sector has not shown signs of a slowdown in the first quarter of 2024. According to the experts' tech stock predictions expressed in this article, 2024 might become another positive year for Big Tech.
Few would dispute that the crash of 1929 was the worst in history. Not only did it produce the largest stock market decline; it also contributed to the Great Depression, an economic crisis that consumed virtually the entire decade of the 1930s.
When the stock market declines, the market value of your stock investment can decline as well. However, because you still own your shares (if you didn't sell them), that value can move back into positive territory when the market changes direction and heads back up. So, you may lose value, but that can be temporary.
A common rule of thumb, the rule of 72, states that you can know how long it'll take for your investment to double by dividing 72 by the rate of return. A 10% annual return means your money should double every 7.2 years.
But there's one group of investors who charge in to buy when stocks are selling off: the corporate insiders. How do they do it? They have 2 key advantages over you and me that provide them the edge during uncertain times. If you follow their lead, you can have that edge too.
