Can you lose more than you invest with leverage?
Using leverage can result in much higher downside risk, sometimes resulting in losses greater than your initial capital investment. On top of that, brokers and contract traders often charge fees, premiums, and margin rates and require you to maintain a margin account with a specific balance.
But it wasn't until my portfolio plummeted, margin calls happened, and the heartburn set in that I really understood what it meant to lose borrowed money. On leverage, rising stocks soar -- and falling stocks plummet. You can lose a lot more than what you initially invested.
Technically, yes. You can lose all your money in stocks or any other investment that has some degree of risk. However, this is rare. Even if you only hold one stock that does very poorly, you'll usually retain some residual value.
As a general rule, this loss should never be more than 3% of trading capital. If a position is leveraged to the point that the potential loss could be, say, 30% of trading capital, then the leverage should be reduced by this measure.
The price of a stock can fall to zero, but you would never lose more than you invested. Although losing your entire investment is painful, your obligation ends there. You will not owe money if a stock declines in value. For these reasons, cash accounts are likely your best bet as a beginner investor.
Investors who trade with leverage can lose more money than they have in their accounts. If the value of your investment falls by 50%, for example, and the leverage ratio is 1:100, you will lose all of your money.
In leverage trading, you're required to maintain a certain amount of equity (initial margin) in your account to cover potential losses. If the market moves against you and your account falls below the required margin, you will face what is referred to as margin call.
Unlimited losses
The potential gain for long investors showcases the main risk for short sellers: The stock can continue rising indefinitely. When you sell a stock short, there's theoretically the potential for unlimited losses. That's because the stock can continue rising over time, wiping out other gains.
It's a shocking statistic — approximately 90% of retail investors lose money in the stock market over the long run. With the rise of commission-free trading apps like Robinhood, more people than ever are trying their hand at stock picking.
Having little or no patience
This bias often causees us jump to conclusions, make impulse decisions, and constantly change our strategy. Ultimately, many people lose money in the stock market because they simply can't wait long enough for meaningful profits to arrive.

Asymmetric Risk to Reward
Most retail traders, however, do it the other way around, making small profits on a number of positions but then holding on to a losing trade for too long and incurring a substantial loss. This can also result in losing more than your initial investment.
One caveat here: if you are buying stocks on margin, you can lose more than your initial investment. On the contrary, you must pay cash for long options, and cannot buy them using margin.
Negative leverage can make sense when there is an opportunity in a volatile market or in a special situation where the potential reward is higher than the risk. However, for any project that uses negative leverage, there must be a plan to transition to positive leverage during the holding period.
Cost of Borrowing: Leverage usually involves borrowing money, and borrowing comes with costs. Interest rates and fees associated with loans or financial instruments can eat into the potential returns. High borrowing costs can erode profits and make leverage less attractive.
With x10 leverage you could execute the same trade, but your $1,000 would act as what is known as a Margin, and you'd effectively be trading with $10,000. Now the 10% gain would translate into a $1,000 profit (10,000*0.10). However, the 10% loss would result in you losing your entire trading capital - 100% loss.
While you are not required to repay the leverage itself, you must maintain a sufficient amount of capital in your trading account to cover potential losses. If your account balance falls below the required margin level due to trading losses, you may receive a margin call from your broker.
A disadvantage of using leverage is the increased risk. When traders borrow funds to invest in assets, they essentially use debt to finance their investments. That means that if the investments do not perform as expected, the trader may lose their initial investment also, owing money to the lender.
Leverage can help significantly in making you rich. This means using something small to control something larger. For example, if you take out a loan to buy a house, you're leveraging your money by controlling an asset much more valuable than what you put into it. This same concept applies to investments as well.
If the shares you shorted become worthless, you don't need to buy them back and will have made a 100% profit. Congratulations!
No. A stock price can't go negative, or, that is, fall below zero. So an investor does not owe anyone money. They will, however, lose whatever money they invested in the stock if the stock falls to zero.
Who loses money when a stock is shorted?
Put simply, a short sale involves the sale of a stock an investor does not own. When an investor engages in short selling, two things can happen. If the price of the stock drops, the short seller can buy the stock at the lower price and make a profit. If the price of the stock rises, the short seller will lose money.
It's also true that some stocks will fall precipitously and lose all their value. That said, whether or not an investor experiences financial loss or gain in the case of a stock reaching zero depends on whether an investor is in a long- or short-term position.
When the stock market declines, the market value of your stock investment can decline as well. However, because you still own your shares (if you didn't sell them), that value can move back into positive territory when the market changes direction and heads back up. So, you may lose value, but that can be temporary.
You can deduct your loss against capital gains. Any taxable capital gain – an investment gain – realized in that tax year can be offset with a capital loss from that year or one carried forward from a prior year. If your losses exceed your gains, you have a net loss. Your net losses offset ordinary income.
Simply put, the stock market crash of 1929 caused the Great Depression because everyone lost money. Investors and businesses both put significant amounts of money into the market, and when it crashed, tremendous amounts of money were lost. Businesses closed and people lost their savings.
