What is a Syllable?
A syllable is one complete sound within spoken or written words. It always has at least one vowel and may include consonants. Syllables play an important role in providing the rhythm and structure of words in spoken language, contributing to the overall flow and pronunciation of words.
What is the Difference Between a Syllable and a Phenome?
It’s important to understand the difference between phonemes and syllables and phonemes.
- Phonemes are the smallest sound units in a language, representing distinct speech sounds.
- Syllables are uninterrupted sounds with at least one vowel and one or more consonants.
- The number of syllables in a word is independent of its number of phonemes. Take the word “Part.” It has 1 syllable but 4 phenomes p-ar-t.
This difference is critical in understanding the structure of words and how they are pronounced, as syllables contribute to word rhythm, and phonemes define the distinct sounds that make up syllables in words.
Why Do We Teach Syllables?
Syllable instruction is important for several reasons:
- Word Decoding: Syllables help children decode and read unfamiliar words, especially longer ones.
- Word Recognition: Understanding syllables aids in recognizing and pronouncing words, even those they have never seen before.
- Reading Comprehension: It improves reading comprehension as children can focus on meaning instead of struggling with pronunciation.

What Are R Controlled Syllables?
R-controlled syllables are very distinct. They consist of a vowel followed by the letter’ r,’ and this ‘r’ significantly impacts how the vowel sounds.
What’s interesting is that these R-controlled vowels can be found at the start (artistic), middle (cart), or end of a word (far).

What are the characteristics Of R-controlled syllables?
Vowel-R syllables may resemble closed syllables, but they differ significantly in the way they work. Compare the words Cat and Car.
- The word Cat is a closed syllable and is pronounced c-a-t.
- The word Car is a bossy R syllable. The ‘r’ at the end of the word controls how the a is pronounced and changes the sound.
Whenever you encounter a vowel followed by ‘r’ in a word, it’s considered an r-controlled syllable.

When Should We Teach R Controlled Syllables?
Teaching Vowel-R syllables can be tricky for kids because the ‘r’ changes how the vowels sound. It’s best to start teaching this in the first grade after students have learned about closed and open syllables, silent ‘e,’ and vowel teams.

The first person to make a row wins. Change the game by asking kids to find a word’s R-controlled syllable or to identify the number of syllables.
R controlled vowels word list
As a parent, you’re always looking for ways to support your child’s learning. Here are some easy ways to use the R-controlled syllable word lists to make learning fun.
- Create a syllable game: Cut apart some charts and create a sorting game where children must sort the words by vowels controlled by the R.
- Practice writing: Ask children to pick and use a word in a sentence. This helps build comprehension. Older children might want to write a story.
- Make a word wall: Parents can create a word wall at home with the words. This can help children with their reading and spelling skills.
- Put together a phonic notebook. Invite your children to choose some words from the lists. Write the words into their books and illustrate them.
- Play a matching game with two-syllable words. You will need some index cards. Write the first syllable on one card and the second syllable on another. Shuffle the cards and place them face down. Children turn the cards over two at a time and try to find the two that go together to create a word. To make it easier, place the cards with the first syllable on one side and the cards with the last syllable on the other.
- Spell 2 or 3-letter words with magnetic letters and ask your child to read them aloud. Insert the bossy R after the vowel and see how the sound changes. The words Cat, Far (prepare the howls of laughter), At, Had, Bid, Tap, Pat, and Pot could be used for this game.
- Make a fun word search: Choose various words from the word lists. Type them in a string, with each word separated by commas. Then copy and paste your list into this Word Search Puzzle Maker.
