My Project

During our school year, students will learn about living things, including plants and animals. The science modules we receive from the district come with guppies, tetras, and snails. If we had a fish tank, it would provide the students with a hands-on learning experience and teach them how to care for living things throughout the entire school year!

Even the smallest of pets enhances our well-being!

This project will provide each student in our class with the opportunity to learn how to care for living things. Some students never get the opportunity to care for a pet or animal at home. Hopefully having class pets will help all students have a sense of pride and ownership.

Students will have the opportunity to investigate each of the animals living in the fish tank. They will be able to observe them up close and have discussions about what living things need and the best way to take care of them. This project can make a huge impact on their understanding of living things.

Guppies, Snails, and Learning, Oh My!, a project from Mrs. Barnes (2024)

    FAQs

    Can turtles eat guppies? ›

Aquatic turtles in the wild eat fish, and "feeder fish" may be purchased from pet stores or bait stores to feed pet turtles. Depending on the size of the turtle, fish such as goldfish, guppies, or minnows may be offered.

What type of selection is occurring with guppies when predators are present? ›

After fewer than 15 generations of selection, the markings of guppies in different ponds had substantially diverged as a result of artificial selection. In the presence of predators, guppies evolved to blend in with their background.

Why do some guppies tend to be more colorful? ›

When male guppies are in an area without predators, they tend to be more colorful, and this is because they need to attract females to mate. This preference for bright colors in mates has led to the evolution of more colorful male guppies.

    What are feeder guppies? ›

Guppy feeders are small and inexpensive fish to feed smaller predator fish or to grow out to become colorful little aquarium live bearers. Each pack comes with about 50 fish, give or take 5%. These feeder guppies are hardy but do require an airstone and clean water.

    Can a turtle eat a banana? ›

If you offer fruit, the amount should be less than 10% of the daily food intake. Box turtles often prefer fruit to vegetables, but fruit is high in sugar and is overall less nutritious. Fruits to offer include apples, pears, bananas (with skin), mango, grapes, star fruit, raisins, peaches, tomato, guava, kiwis, and ...

What fish won't turtles eat? ›

Here are fish that shouldn't be eaten by turtles, which means they can't live with them either:
    • Carp.
    • Gizzard shad.
    • Goldfish.
    • Feathered minnows.
    • Rosy red minnows.
    • Wild-caught fish.

What is the rarest guppy colour? ›

According to Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod, acclaimed scientist and author of "Starting Your Tropical Aquarium," a rare guppy lineage includes the bronze and blue strain, such as the Moscow purple or blue.

Why does my female guppy look fuzzy? ›

Symptoms of Cotton Wool Disease in Freshwater Fish

The most common clinical sign of cotton wool disease is a pale, raised patch on your fish's skin. It can be anywhere on the body, including the face, mouth, and fins. These lesions typically have a fluffy appearance similar to a fungal growth.

What color lights do guppies like? ›

    8,000K White

This is a warmer white light that enhances reds, greens, oranges, gold, and yellow colors in many fish, including: swordtails, platies, guppies, goldfish, bettas, discus, tetras with red colors, rainbow sharks, and albino fish.

What do guppies do when they have babies? ›

Learn about our Editorial Policy. Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are livebearers, which means these fish give birth to live, viable, free-swimming young. In fact, guppies don't lay eggs at all.

What type of fish can live with turtles? ›

There are three kinds of fish that will fit in the fish tank together with the most common pet turtle. They are tetra fish, zebrafish, yellow cichlids. For those who have never put a fish in a turtle tank, it's recommended that you start with a small amount of tetra or zebrafish. Both species are cheap.

Are turtles harmful to fish? ›

On the other hand, snapping turtles and softshell turtles are piscivorous (fish eating) and can potentially impact gamefish populations. They grow to large sizes and should be removed if quality fishing is top priority. Snapping turtles are notorious for snagging young ducklings from the water surface.

What can you feed turtles? ›

Generally, pet turtles are omnivores, meaning that they eat both meat and plants. A typical adult pet turtle diet should include animal products, vegetables, and fruits. Younger turtles between about 7 to 10 years old usually need a larger share of animal-sourced foods.

Can red-eared sliders live with guppies? ›

Red ear sliders will try to eat most fish kept with them. In a large habitat, fish like koi may survive with red ear sliders, though the turtles may nip their fins. Very small, agile fish like guppies may be able to survive with turtles, though they may overpopulate the tank.
